Project overview

A generation of Palestinian children has watched their schools close, be damaged, or fill with displaced families seeking shelter. Every month out of the classroom widens the gap they will have to climb back through — and quietly steals part of their childhood. Rebuild Schools & Classrooms exists to reverse that.

The project works along a spectrum. Where buildings can be saved, we repair roofs, replace shattered windows and doors, restore water and sanitation, and make classrooms structurally safe to use again. Where they cannot, we establish weatherproof temporary learning spaces — durable, well-lit rooms and tents beside shelters where lessons can begin within weeks.

A rebuilt room is only useful if it is equipped for learning, so every space we restore is fitted out with desks, boards, storage and teaching materials, and connected to safe drinking water and clean latrines. We work with education authorities and communities so that each rebuilt school reopens as part of a functioning system, not in isolation.

Beyond the bricks, this project restores routine and safety to children living through upheaval. A classroom offers structure, friendship, and adults who show up every morning — the ordinary things that help a child feel like a child again.

Frequently asked questions

Do you rebuild permanent schools or temporary ones?

Both, depending on conditions. Where a building can be saved we repair it; where rebuilding is not yet possible we set up durable temporary learning spaces so children can keep learning now, and shift toward permanent reconstruction as access allows.

How soon can children start learning in a new space?

A temporary learning space can be established and equipped within weeks, so lessons resume quickly. Full classroom repairs take longer but reopen a school that can serve a community for years.

Who teaches in the rebuilt classrooms?

Wherever possible we work with local teachers — many themselves displaced — supported through our stipend programme, and coordinate with education authorities so each reopened school fits into the wider system.
